Every Cyprus business has competitors, and most owners keep half an eye on them — a glance at a shop window, a comment from a customer, a rumour about prices. Online, you can do far better than rumours. Your competitors' websites, Google listings, ads and reviews are all public, and reading them properly takes about an hour.
That hour tells you what customers in your market respond to, where your rivals are weak, and which ideas are worth borrowing. Here is a simple process any business owner can follow — no paid tools, no technical skills required.
Search like a customer, not like an owner
Open a private browser window (so your own history doesn't skew the results) and search for what a customer would actually type: "plumber Limassol", "wedding photographer Paphos", "accountant Nicosia". Note who appears in three places: the paid ads at the top, the map results with the pins, and the normal listings below.
The businesses that show up again and again are your real online competitors — and they may not be the ones you think of as rivals offline. Write down the top three or four names. That short list is who you are analysing.
Read their reviews — especially the bad ones
Google reviews are the cheapest market research in existence. Open each competitor's Google Business Profile, read their most recent reviews, then filter for the one- and two-star ratings.
The praise tells you what your market now expects as standard: fast replies, clear pricing, service in both Greek and English. The complaints tell you where the gap is. If three rivals are all criticised for slow responses, then answering every enquiry within the hour becomes your advantage — and something worth saying openly on your own website.
Study their websites on your phone
Visit each competitor's site on your phone, because that is how most of your customers will see it. Ask five questions as you scroll:
- Does the page load quickly, or do you find yourself waiting?
- Is it clear within a few seconds what they offer and which towns they serve?
- Do they show prices, or hide them?
- How do they ask you to get in touch — a form, a phone number, WhatsApp, online booking?
- Is the site in Greek, English or both?
You are not judging design taste. You are looking for what they make easy and what they make hard. Every step a competitor makes hard is a step you can make easy.
See what they pay to promote
Two free tools show you exactly what your competitors consider worth spending money on. Google's Ads Transparency Center lets you look up any advertiser and see the ads they are currently running. Meta's Ad Library does the same for Facebook and Instagram.
If a rival has been running the same ad for months, it is probably working — note the offer and the wording. And if nobody in your market is advertising at all, that is useful too: it usually means attention is cheap for whoever moves first.
Turn your notes into three decisions
The point of all this is not imitation. If you copy a competitor, you make them the original and yourself the alternative. Instead, distil everything you found into three short lists:
- Match: the things that have become standard in your market — perhaps online booking, or bilingual pages — that you must offer simply to compete.
- Beat: the one weakness that keeps appearing in their reviews, which you will visibly do better and promote.
- Ignore: the things rivals do that customers never seem to mention. Not every feature deserves your time or budget.
Then put a reminder in your calendar to repeat the exercise every three months. Markets shift, new competitors appear, and the business that notices first usually wins.
