Most Cyprus businesses that run Google Ads can tell you what they spent last month. Far fewer can tell you what they got for it. They see clicks and a cost per click, and then the trail goes cold.
Conversion tracking is the piece that closes that gap. It tells Google, and you, which clicks turned into something valuable: a form sent, a call made, a booking, an order. Without it, you are paying for traffic and hoping. With it, you are paying for results and measuring them.
What a conversion actually is
A conversion is any action on your website that means money, or the realistic prospect of money. For a Limassol dentist it is a booked appointment. For a Paphos villa rental company it is an enquiry form. For an online shop it is a completed order.
The mistake most businesses make is tracking nothing, or tracking the wrong thing. A visit to the contact page is not a conversion. A form actually submitted is. The difference matters because Google's ad system optimises for whatever you tell it counts. Tell it the wrong thing and it will cheerfully deliver more of the wrong thing.
Why it changes your results, not just your reports
Conversion tracking is not only a reporting tool. Google Ads uses conversion data to decide who sees your ad and how much to bid. Automated bidding strategies such as Maximise Conversions and Target CPA learn from every conversion you record.
Give the system a clear signal and it works out which searches, devices, times of day and towns produce customers. It then bids more for those and less for the rest. Give it no signal and it optimises for clicks, which means the cheapest traffic it can find.
What to track for a typical Cyprus business
- Form submissions. Contact, quote and booking forms. Track the successful submit or the thank-you page, never the form page itself.
- Phone calls. Calls from the ad's call button and taps on the phone number on your website. On mobile, most Cyprus enquiries still start with a call.
- WhatsApp taps. If you have a WhatsApp button, count it. For many local businesses it has quietly overtaken email.
- Purchases, with their value, if you sell online. A €400 order and a €15 order should not count the same.
- Completed bookings in your reservation system, if you have one.
Keep the list short. Three to five conversions that each mean something real beat twenty that mean nothing.
How it is set up
1. The tag
A small piece of code, usually installed through Google Tag Manager, sits on every page of your site. It does nothing until it is told what to watch for.
2. The triggers
You define the moments that count: a form sent successfully, a button tapped, an order confirmed. Each becomes a conversion action in Google Ads. The same events can feed Google Analytics 4, so both tools tell the same story. Our guide to the GA4 numbers worth watching covers that side.
3. Consent
Because Cyprus is in the EU, tracking has to respect your cookie banner. Google's consent mode handles this: it records less when a visitor declines and estimates the gap. If your banner and your tags are not connected, you are either breaking the rules or flying blind.
4. Testing
Submit a test enquiry, make a test call, and check that each shows up in Google Ads within a day. A surprising number of accounts have tracking that was set up once, broke during a website change, and has reported zero ever since. Nobody noticed because nobody looked.
Common mistakes we fix
- Counting page views as conversions. It floods Google with false positives.
- Counting the same enquiry twice. A form event and a thank-you page view both marked as conversions doubles your numbers and halves your real cost per lead.
- Losing tracking in a redesign. New site, new theme, tags left behind. If a rebuild is coming, read our guide on keeping your rankings through a redesign and add "keep the tracking" to the checklist.
- Ignoring what happens after the lead. An enquiry is not a sale. Telling Google which leads became customers, known as offline conversion import, is the most valuable step. Even a monthly spreadsheet upload helps.
What you will finally be able to see
With tracking in place, the questions that used to be guesswork get answers. Which keyword produced last week's four bookings. Whether the Nicosia campaign or the Larnaca one delivers cheaper enquiries.
That is the difference between an ad budget you tolerate and one you grow with confidence. If you are running ads on a limited spend, our small-budget Google Ads guide shows how far a modest budget goes once the targeting is informed by real conversions. And once the enquiries arrive, see why replying fast wins more customers.
Where to start this week
- Open Google Ads, go to Goals, then Conversions. If the list is empty or every entry shows zero, you have your answer.
- Write down the three actions on your site that mean money.
- Ask whoever manages your site or ads to track exactly those, connect consent mode, and send you a screenshot of a test conversion.
If you would rather have it checked properly, get in touch. A tracking audit takes an afternoon and usually pays for itself with the first campaign you stop wasting money on.
