Ask most Cyprus business owners where their marketing budget goes, and you will hear the same answers: social media ads, Google Ads, maybe a boost for an Instagram post. Email rarely makes the list. Yet study after study puts email marketing at the top for return on investment — commonly cited at around €36 back for every €1 spent. It is the channel you own, it costs almost nothing to run, and your competitors in Cyprus are mostly ignoring it.
Why email beats renting your audience
When you post on Facebook or Instagram, the platform decides who sees it — usually a small fraction of your own followers, unless you pay. Your email list is different. You own it. No algorithm change can take it away, no ad price increase can make it unaffordable, and no platform can suspend your account and cut you off from your customers overnight.
That matters for a small business. If you have 500 people who bought from you or asked about your services, an email reaches all 500 of them for the cost of a coffee. Reaching those same people reliably through ads would cost far more, every single time.
Building a list the right way
The biggest mistake we see is buying email lists. Do not do it. Purchased lists produce spam complaints, damage your sender reputation, and breach GDPR — which applies fully in Cyprus and carries real fines. Every address on your list should belong to someone who chose to hear from you.
Practical ways to grow a clean list:
- Offer something useful at signup. A discount code, a free guide, a checklist. "Subscribe to our newsletter" alone rarely works; "Get 10% off your first order" does.
- Ask at the till or on the invoice. If customers already buy from you in person, invite them to join your list for offers and updates.
- Add a signup box to your busiest pages. Your homepage and your most-visited blog posts are prime real estate.
- Collect consent properly. Use a clear opt-in checkbox, say what you will send, and always include an unsubscribe link. It keeps you GDPR-compliant and your list healthy.
What to send (when you have nothing to say)
"We have no news" is the most common reason businesses go quiet. But your emails do not need news — they need to be useful or interesting to the reader. Ideas that work for almost any business:
- Answer the questions customers ask you every week. If people keep asking it in your shop, thousands are typing it into Google.
- Show your work. A recent project, a before-and-after, a customer story. Proof sells better than promises.
- Seasonal reminders. Air-conditioning servicing before summer, tax deadlines, holiday opening hours, gift guides before Christmas.
- A genuinely good offer — occasionally. If every email is a discount, people tune out. One promotion for every two or three helpful emails is a healthy ratio.
One email every two to four weeks is plenty. Consistency beats frequency: a short, useful monthly email outperforms a burst of five messages followed by six months of silence.
The three numbers that tell you it is working
Every email platform — Mailchimp, Brevo, MailerLite and others — shows you dozens of statistics. Only three matter at the start:
- Open rate: around 20–35% is normal for small business lists. Lower than that usually means weak subject lines or a stale list.
- Click rate: 2–5% of recipients clicking a link is solid. This tells you the content actually interested people.
- Unsubscribes: a few per email is healthy — those people were never going to buy. A sudden spike means you are emailing too often or drifting off-topic.
Start small, start this month
You do not need fancy automation to begin. Pick a platform with a free tier, import the customer emails you have permission to use, and send one honest, useful email. Write it the way you would speak to a customer standing in front of you — in plain language, about something they care about.
Email is not glamorous, and that is exactly why it works: while everyone else fights for attention in crowded social feeds, you land directly in the one inbox your customer checks every day.
