Google Search Console: The Free SEO Report You Are Ignoring

Most Cyprus business owners have heard of Google Analytics. Far fewer have opened Google Search Console, even though it is free, takes ten minutes to set up, and answers the one question every owner asks: "Why is my website not showing up on Google?"

Analytics tells you what people did once they reached your site. Search Console tells you what happened before that: which searches showed your pages, how often people clicked, and what is stopping Google from listing you at all. This guide explains the four reports worth reading each month and what to do with each one.

What Google Search Console actually is

Search Console is Google's own free reporting tool for website owners. Once you prove you own a domain, Google shows you data it collects while crawling and ranking your pages. No other tool has this data, because no other tool is Google.

Setting it up means adding a small verification record to your domain or a line of code to your site. If an agency built your website, ask them to add you as an owner in your own Google account, not just theirs.

Report 1: Performance, the searches that bring you customers

The Performance report lists every search query where your site appeared, with four numbers: impressions, clicks, average position and click-through rate. This is where the useful surprises live.

  • Queries with many impressions but few clicks. Google is showing you, but people choose someone else. Usually the page title or description is weak. Our guide to page titles and meta descriptions covers the fix.
  • Queries you never targeted. A Limassol accountant might find people searching for "company registration Cyprus cost" landing on a general services page. That is a signal to write a dedicated page.
  • Pages sitting in positions 8 to 15. These are one push from page one. Add detail, internal links and a clearer heading, and watch them move.

Filter by country to see Cyprus separately from the rest of the world. Filter by device to check whether phone visitors behave differently, since they are most of your traffic.

Report 2: Pages, what Google has and has not indexed

The Pages report, under Indexing, shows how many of your pages Google has stored and, more importantly, which ones it has left out and why. Common reasons you will see:

  • "Crawled, currently not indexed." Google visited the page and decided it was not worth listing. Thin pages, near-duplicates and old news posts usually end up here. Improve or remove them.
  • "Discovered, currently not indexed." Google knows the page exists but has not got round to it. More internal links and a submitted sitemap help.
  • "Page with redirect" or "Not found (404)." Normal after a redesign, but check that important old URLs redirect to the right new pages. Our redesign guide explains why this matters.
  • "Excluded by noindex tag." Fine for a thank-you page. A disaster if it is your homepage, and it happens when a staging setting goes live.

Check that your sitemap is submitted under the Sitemaps section. It is the list of pages you want Google to read, and it should be updated automatically whenever you publish.

Report 3: Core Web Vitals and mobile usability

Under Experience, Search Console grades your pages on speed and stability as real visitors experience them. Pages marked "Poor" or "Needs improvement" load slowly, shift around while loading, or respond sluggishly to taps.

These grades are a ranking factor, but the bigger cost is human. A visitor on a mobile connection in Paphos who waits four seconds for your menu leaves and calls the next restaurant. If you see red here, the fixes are usually oversized images, too many plugins and cheap hosting. Read our piece on the hidden cost of a slow website for the detail.

Report 4: Security issues and manual actions

This is the report you hope is always empty. If your site has been hacked, or Google's reviewers have penalised it for breaking a policy, this is where you find out. Google also emails owners when something appears, which is another reason to hold owner access in your own account.

A manual action can remove a business from search entirely. Knowing within a day rather than three months later is the difference between a quick fix and a lost season.

A ten-minute monthly routine

  1. Open Performance, set the date range to the last three months, and compare with the previous three. Are clicks and impressions rising or falling? Note the top five queries.
  2. Sort queries by impressions and look for low click-through rates. Pick one page to rewrite the title for.
  3. Open Pages and check the "not indexed" reasons. Anything important stuck there gets fixed or linked to.
  4. Glance at Core Web Vitals and Security. Any red, any message, deal with it that week.

Ten minutes a month is enough to catch most problems before they cost you customers, because you are fixing the things Google is quietly telling you about.

What Search Console will not tell you

It does not show competitor data, it does not track phone calls or form submissions, and its keyword data is sampled, so very low-volume searches may not appear. Pair it with Google Analytics 4 for what happens after the click, and with your Google Business Profile insights for map searches.

The bottom line

Google Search Console is the closest thing to a direct line from Google about your website, and it is free. If you have never opened it, or you have access but no idea what you are looking at, get in touch. We will walk through your reports with you and turn them into a short, prioritised list of fixes.
