QR Codes for Cyprus Businesses: Turn Print Into Web Visits

Every phone in Cyprus can read a QR code. Point the camera, tap the link, and you are on a web page. No app, no typing. For a business that still spends money on flyers, menus, signs and packaging, that little square is the cheapest bridge there is between the printed world and your website.

Most codes are wasted, though. They lead to a homepage, a PDF nobody can read on a phone, or a link that died when a free trial ended. Here is how to use them properly.

Where a QR code earns its place

A code works when someone has a phone in hand, a moment to spare and a reason to scan. Good spots:

  • Shop window: "Closed? Scan to see our stock and opening hours." Your window keeps working at night.
  • Tables and counters: the menu, the Wi-Fi password, or a booking link for the next visit.
  • Receipts and packaging: a direct link to leave a Google review or to reorder.
  • Flyers, brochures and business cards: the full price list, a quote form, or your contact details saved in one tap.
  • Property boards and event stands: photos, floor plans and a viewing request.

Bad spots: vans and roadside billboards (nobody can scan at 80 km/h), places with no mobile signal, and your own website or emails, where a normal link does the job.

Send people to the right page

The scan is a promise. If the sign says "Scan for the lunch menu", the page must open on the lunch menu, not the homepage. Three rules:

  • Link to one specific page that matches the words next to the code. The same thinking applies to landing pages for ads.
  • Make sure that page works on a phone, because every scan comes from one. A PDF menu that needs pinching and zooming loses people.
  • Offer English and Greek at the top of the page, because tourists will be scanning too.

Static or dynamic? Keep control of the link

A static code holds the web address itself. It is free to make, never expires, and cannot be changed once printed. A dynamic code points to a go-between service that forwards the visitor, so you can change the destination later and see scan counts. The catch is the monthly fee: stop paying and every code you ever printed can stop working.

There is a third way that gives you the best of both. Make a static code that points to a short address on your own domain, such as yourbusiness.com.cy/menu. Your web developer can redirect that address anywhere, at any time, for free. You own the link, and no subscription can switch it off.

Track every scan

Without tracking, a scan shows up in your analytics as a visitor from nowhere. The fix is a tracking tag: a few extra words on the end of the link that tell Google Analytics where the visit came from. For example:

yourbusiness.com.cy/offer?utm_source=flyer&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=autumn

Use a different tag for each place: window, flyer, receipt. After a month, Google Analytics will show which printed item sent visitors, and which of them enquired or bought. That is how you find out whether 5,000 flyers were worth printing.

Print it so it scans

  • Size: at least 2 cm wide on anything held in the hand. For signs, allow roughly one tenth of the scanning distance, so 20 cm for a poster read from two metres.
  • Contrast: dark code on a light background. Pale brand colours and inverted codes can fail on some phones.
  • Space: keep a clear white margin around the code and avoid folds, curves and glossy laminate that catches the light.
  • Words: always say what the scan gives. "Scan to book a table" beats a lonely square.
  • Test: print one copy and scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone before ordering the full run.

A note on safety

Fraudsters sometimes stick their own code over a real one to send people to a fake payment page. Check your public codes now and then, and print your web address beneath the code so customers can see where it should lead. It is a small habit that fits with the rest of your website security basics.

Start this week

Pick one printed item you already hand out. Create a short address on your own domain, add a tracking tag, generate a free static code, and write a clear instruction next to it. Check the numbers in a month.
