Google's New Free SEO Course: What Cyprus Owners Should Watch

On 6 October 2026, Google's Search Central team announced two new learning paths on its YouTube channel: a Search fundamentals for beginners playlist and a Technical SEO fundamentals playlist. Google has published hundreds of SEO videos over the years, but they were scattered across different series. Now they are arranged in order, from first principles to measurement, and they cost nothing.

For a Cyprus business owner that is genuinely useful, but it is also easy to misuse. Here is what the two playlists contain, which one is for you, and how to turn a few hours of videos into real changes on your own website.

What Google actually released

The beginners playlist is aimed at website owners, marketers and content creators. It covers how Google crawls, indexes and shows pages, what the parts of a search result are, how to set up and read Google Search Console, and how to use Google Trends to see what people are searching for.

The technical playlist skips the basics. It is for developers: robots.txt, crawl budget, fixing indexing problems, duplicate content, how browsers render a page, page weight, and automating Search Console exports through its API.

Both playlists are free on the Search Central channel, and the announcement lists every topic. More importantly, the videos are made by the people who build Google Search. A lot of SEO advice online is guesswork or years out of date. This is the official version.

Which playlist is for you

If you run a restaurant, clinic, shop, law firm or hotel and you manage your own website or work with an agency, watch the beginners playlist and skip the technical one. You do not need to understand crawl budget to run a successful business website in Limassol or Paphos, and nothing in it will change what you do day to day.

The technical playlist is for whoever looks after your site's code. If that is an agency or a freelance developer, send them the link and ask one question: "Is there anything in here we are not doing?" A good partner will give you a short, honest answer. If you are not sure how to judge that answer, our guide to choosing a digital agency in Cyprus covers the questions worth asking.

A four-week plan that fits around a business

Watching twenty videos in one evening teaches you very little. Pair each part of the playlist with one task on your own site instead.

  • Week 1: how Search works. Watch the crawling, indexing and serving videos. Then search Google for your business name, and for your main service plus your town, and note which of your pages appear and how they look.
  • Week 2: Search Console setup. Watch the setup videos and make sure Search Console is verified under an account your company owns. If an agency set it up, ask to be added as an owner, not just a user.
  • Week 3: performance reports. Export your top twenty search queries from the last three months. Mark the ones that bring clicks, and the ones with many impressions but few clicks. The second group is usually a page title or description problem you can fix yourself.
  • Week 4: Trends and content. Compare two or three of your services in Google Trends with the region set to Cyprus, and use what you see to choose your next page or article.

Keep a one-page note of what you changed and when. In two months the Search Console graphs will tell you whether it worked.

What the videos will not tell you

Google's playlists are global and general. Three things that matter a great deal in Cyprus are missing or barely mentioned.

  • Google Business Profile. For most local businesses here, the map listing brings more enquiries than the website's organic ranking. The playlists are about websites, not listings.
  • Greek and English. Locals search in Greek, visitors and expats in English, and plenty of people in Greeklish. Each language needs its own page with its own title, which our bilingual websites guide explains.
  • Reviews and directory listings. Recent reviews and consistent listings move local rankings more than most technical fixes ever will.

Two traps to avoid

The first trap is learning instead of doing. Watching all the videos feels productive, but Google only notices changes to your pages. Stop after each week and make one change.

The second trap is the opposite: watching the technical playlist and then asking your developer to implement everything in it. Most Cyprus business sites have a few dozen pages. Crawl budget, bulk data exports and API automation are problems you do not have, and paying to solve them is money wasted.

A sensible split

You watch the beginners playlist, own your Search Console account and check it once a month. Your developer or agency watches the technical playlist and confirms, in writing, that your site is healthy. That split is how most well-run small businesses handle SEO, and Google has just made both halves free to learn.

If you would rather someone watched the technical playlist for you and told you in plain English what applies to your site, get in touch. It is usually a short conversation.
