When Customers Ask ChatGPT: Get Your Cyprus Business Recommended

"Who is a good accountant in Limassol?" "Best family restaurant near Paphos harbour?" A growing number of customers no longer type these questions into Google. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot, and get back a short list of names with a sentence about each. If your business is not on that list, you never even get the chance to compete.

The good news: AI assistants do not pick businesses at random, and most of what gets you recommended is work a well-run business should be doing anyway.

How AI assistants decide who to recommend

When someone asks for a local recommendation, most assistants run a live web search in the background, read the top results, and summarise what they find. That means they lean on the same sources you already know:

  • Your own website, especially pages that clearly state what you do, where, and for whom.
  • Business listings such as Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and local directories.
  • Reviews on Google, TripAdvisor, Facebook and industry sites, including what customers actually say.
  • Mentions elsewhere: local news, "best of" lists, supplier pages and forums.

The assistant is looking for consistent, confident evidence. If five sources agree that you are a reliable plumber in Larnaca who handles emergencies, you are an easy recommendation. If your website is vague and your listings contradict each other, you are a risky one, and the AI will play it safe with someone else.

Step 1: Ask the assistants yourself

Start with a ten-minute test. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the questions your customers would ask: "best [your service] in [your town]", "who does [specific job] in Cyprus", in English and in Greek. Note who gets mentioned, what is said about them, and which sources are linked. Then ask directly about your business by name and check that the details are correct.

Repeat this every month. It is the AI-era version of checking what customers see when they Google your business name.

Step 2: Make your website say it plainly

AI assistants are literal readers. A homepage that says "Excellence in every detail" tells them nothing. One that says "Family-run dental clinic in Strovolos, Nicosia, open Saturdays, English and Greek spoken" gives them something to quote.

Make sure your site clearly states your services, the areas you cover, opening hours, prices or price ranges where possible, and who you are best for. A good FAQ page is particularly valuable, because it answers questions in the same question-and-answer shape the assistants use.

Step 3: Fix your listings, including Bing

Your name, address, phone number and hours should be identical everywhere. Inconsistent details are one of the main reasons an AI hesitates to recommend a business. Our guide to business directory listings walks through the ones that matter in Cyprus.

Do not skip Bing Places. Many Cypriot businesses ignore Bing because few people search with it directly, but several AI tools draw on Bing's data. A free, complete Bing listing is one of the cheapest wins on this list.

Step 4: Earn reviews that describe what you do

Star ratings matter, but the text of reviews matters more to an AI. A review that says "they fixed our air-conditioning the same day in August" teaches the assistant exactly what you are good at. When you ask for reviews, encourage customers to mention the service they used and the area they are in. Never script or fake them.

Step 5: Do not block AI crawlers by accident

Some websites, often after a security plugin update or a well-meaning developer change, block AI crawlers in their robots.txt file. If the assistants cannot read your site, they will describe you using whatever third-party sites say instead. Ask your web developer to confirm that search-related AI crawlers are allowed, even if you choose to block those used only for model training.

How to tell if it is working

Visitors who click a link inside ChatGPT or Perplexity often show up in Google Analytics as referrals from sites such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. Check your referral report monthly. Our post on AI search traffic reports explains where else to look. Also start asking new customers "how did you find us?" and add "an AI assistant" as an option. You may be surprised.

The bottom line

AI assistants reward the same things good customers do: clear information, consistent details, and genuine proof from other people. The businesses that get recommended are rarely the biggest. They are the easiest to understand. This builds on the same foundations as getting cited in Google's AI Overviews, so effort here pays off twice.
