Gift Vouchers Online: Easy Extra Sales for Cyprus Businesses

Every December, someone in Cyprus stands in a salon, a restaurant or a shop and asks the same question: "Do you do gift vouchers?" If the answer is a handwritten card from a drawer, you are selling vouchers the hard way. A voucher page on your own website turns that question into a sale at 11pm on a Sunday, from a cousin in London, without anyone on your team lifting a finger.

Why vouchers are worth your time

A gift voucher is cash before the work. The buyer pays today; you deliver the haircut, the dinner or the massage weeks later. That helps the quiet months after the tourist season. It also brings in a new customer: the person who receives the voucher often has never visited you, and a good first visit becomes a repeat customer.

Cyprus gives you more occasions than most countries. Christmas and New Year, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter, graduations and a full calendar of name days. Each one is a reason for someone to buy from you without visiting.

Who this works for

Vouchers sell well wherever the gift is an experience or a choice: hair and beauty, spas, restaurants and wine bars, boat trips and activity operators, photographers, gyms and yoga studios, cooking or pottery classes, florists and independent shops. If you run a restaurant website or a salon with online booking, you already have most of what you need.

Sell from your website, not only at the counter

The counter still matters, but the website is where the growth is. Many buyers live abroad and want to treat family in Cyprus. Others decide late at night. A voucher page that takes a card payment and sends the voucher by email instantly captures all of them.

Give the buyer two delivery choices: an email voucher sent straight to the recipient on a date they pick, or a printable PDF they can put in a card. Let them add a short personal message. Both cost you nothing once the page is built.

What the voucher page needs

  • Clear amounts. Three or four fixed values (for example €30, €50, €100) plus a "choose your own amount" box. Fixed values sell faster because they remove a decision.
  • Experience options. "Dinner for two with wine" or "60-minute massage" sells better than a bare number, because the buyer can picture the gift.
  • What it can be used for. Any service, any product, one branch or all branches. Say it plainly.
  • Validity. Twelve months is fair and common. Print the expiry date on the voucher itself.
  • A unique code. Every voucher needs a code your staff can look up, so a voucher is used once and only once.
  • Payment that works on a phone. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay at minimum. Our guide to payment methods for Cyprus websites covers the choices.

The rules and the money side

Keep a register of every voucher sold: code, amount, date sold, expiry, and the date it was redeemed. A spreadsheet is fine at first. Train staff to check the code and mark it used before serving the customer, otherwise the same voucher gets redeemed twice and the register is worthless.

Ask your accountant about VAT before you start. Under the EU rules Cyprus applies, a voucher for one specific service at a known VAT rate is taxed when it is sold, while a general-value voucher that could buy anything is taxed when it is redeemed. The difference changes how you book the sale.

Unredeemed vouchers are not free money. Record them properly and be fair about expiry. A customer who misses the date by a week and is sent away tells everyone. A short grace period costs you little and protects your reviews.

The recipient's name and email are personal data. Use them only to deliver the voucher unless the person has agreed to hear from you again.

Tools that fit a small business

If you sell online already, your shop platform almost certainly has a gift-card feature or a low-cost add-on. If you use booking software for a salon, spa or activity, check its settings first, because most include vouchers that redeem automatically against a booking. Our online booking guide explains that setup.

With no shop or booking system, a dedicated voucher page with a payment link is a weekend job for a developer and needs no monthly fee. Branded printed vouchers and a QR code by the till can point walk-in customers to the same page.

A plan for the next six weeks

Set the page up in October and test a real €10 purchase yourself, including the email that arrives. In November, add a "Give the gift of…" banner on your homepage, a link in your Instagram bio and a line on your Google Business Profile, so it is ready when Black Friday shoppers start looking. In December, mention it in every email and at every checkout. In January, count how many vouchers were sold, how many were redeemed and how many redeemers came back.
