Most people in Cyprus check a text message within minutes. An email can wait days, and a social post may never be seen at all. That is why a short message to a customer's phone is still one of the cheapest ways a small business can bring someone back. This guide covers the one-to-many side: sending the same message to a list of customers who agreed to hear from you. For one-to-one chat with enquiries, read our WhatsApp Business guide.
Why messaging works so well in Cyprus
Nearly every phone on the island has Viber installed, and every phone can receive SMS. Phones are always on, and a message lands on the lock screen rather than in a crowded inbox. For a salon, a clinic, a restaurant or a shop with regular customers, that means a reminder or an offer is actually read, usually the same hour it is sent. Compare that with a newsletter, which does well if one in four people open it.
SMS or Viber?
SMS reaches every phone, needs no app, and is best for short, urgent messages. One message holds 160 characters in English, but only 70 in Greek, because Greek letters use a different alphabet. A long Greek message is billed as two or three, so write short.
Viber messages can carry a picture, a button and a link, and they cost less per message when you send in volume. Business messages go out through an approved Viber partner, not from a personal account, and most partners can fall back to SMS when a number has no Viber. A simple rule: appointment and order updates by SMS, offers with a photo by Viber.
Consent first, always
Under GDPR and the Cyprus electronic communications law, marketing messages need the customer's prior agreement. There is one useful exception: if someone gave you their number while buying from you, you may message them about similar products, as long as they could say no at the time and can stop at any moment. Every message must include an easy way out, such as "Reply STOP". Keep a record of when and how each person agreed. Never buy a list, and never message numbers scraped from Facebook groups. Complaints go to the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, and fines are real. Our GDPR guide explains the basics.
Messages worth sending
- Reminders: appointment tomorrow at 10:00, with a link to reschedule. This alone cuts no-shows noticeably.
- Updates: your order is ready, your table is confirmed, your car is done.
- Time-limited offers: one offer, one deadline, sent to people who opted in. Good for quiet weekdays and the off-season.
- Win-backs: a friendly note to customers you have not seen for six months, the list we described in our repeat customers guide.
- Review requests: a thank-you with a direct link to your Google reviews, sent the day after a visit.
Writing a message people tap
Start with your business name, because the number may be unfamiliar. Make one offer, not three. Add one link, pointing to a page on your own website with a tracking tag so you can see who came from the message. Give a deadline. Write in the language the customer used with you, and keep Greek and English as two separate messages rather than one bilingual wall of text. Send between 10:00 and 19:00, never on a Sunday morning, and never more than two to four times a month. The moment messages feel like spam, people leave, and they do not come back.
Measure it like any other channel
Three numbers tell you whether it is working: how many people tapped the link, how many used the offer code or booked, and how many opted out. A tap rate above ten percent is healthy for a small local list. If more than two percent of recipients opt out after a send, you are messaging too often or to the wrong people. Put the results on the same sheet as your other monthly numbers so messaging competes fairly with ads and email, as our email marketing guide suggests for newsletters.
Start this month
Pick one use, usually reminders or a win-back. Add a consent tick-box to your booking form, your website form and a small card by the till, and a QR code on receipts that leads to a sign-up page. Choose a tool that supports a Cyprus sender name and Viber with SMS fallback. Fifty consenting customers are enough to begin. Send one message, look at the three numbers, and improve the next one.
